VDOT to Open Meadow Creek Parkway on January 6

Albemarle County will rename county portion of roadway for Senator John Warner

The Virginia Department of Transportation and Albemarle County will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new Meadow Creek Parkway. The event is scheduled for Friday, January 6, at 10 a.m. on the new parkway at its northern terminus near the Charlottesville Albemarle Technology Education Center (CATEC). The public is invited to attend.

The event will also include Albemarle County’s renaming of its portion of the roadway as John W. Warner Parkway. Warner served in the U.S. Senate for 30 years and was a champion of the Meadow Creek Parkway project, helping to secure $27 million in federal transportation funds for the road’s interchange at the Route 250 Bypass.

Expected to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony are Senator Warner, Commonwealth Transportation Board member James E. Rich, members of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, and a representative from the project contractor, Faulconer Construction Co. Limited parking will be available at CATEC, located at 1000 East Rio Road, Charlottesville.

VDOT is currently working to prepare the parkway’s traffic signals for operation. The signals will go into flashing mode on Thursday, with regular phase operation beginning after the ribbon cutting on Friday. The temporary signal that was installed at Dunlora Drive will also convert to flashing on Thursday and will be taken down Friday.

The Meadow Creek Parkway is a 1.4-mile, two-lane parkway running from East Rio Road south to the Charlottesville city limits at Melbourne Road. The parkway provides an alternate route for traffic headed to Charlottesville from the north. Construction of the $11.8 million project was completed on October 13, and on December 7, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors requested that VDOT open the roadway.
