County Police to Step Up Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement
7/21/2011

The Albemarle County Police Department Traffic Unit has two certified Federal Motor Carrier Safety Inspectors.  Officer Rhodes and Officer Lytton attended a two week school sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and was hosted by the Virginia State Police.  These officers completed this rigorous course in November 2010.  Upon completion of this course, these officers had to complete thirty-two inspections under the watchful eye of a certified motor carrier inspector from the Virginia State Police.  This process was completed in January 2011.

Since January 2011, these officers have inspected 210 commercial motor vehicles, which resulted in the sixty-three commercial motor vehicles being taken out of service for major safety violations.   It also resulted in fifteen drivers being taken out of service for various violations, the vast majority of which were for operating a commercial motor vehicle without having a commercial driver's license.  There have been six post crash inspections that resulted in eighteen violations, of those there were two out of service violations.

The Albemarle County Police Department would like to remind the commercial motor vehicle driving public that Louisa Road, Gordonsville Road and Critzer Shop Road are restricted length highways.  Commercial Motor Vehicles cannot be longer than sixty-five feet in total length.  There have been twenty-one summonses issued on the restricted length highways.  Eighteen of those summonses were on Louisa Road and Gordonsville Road.  We would also remind drivers that the bridge on Richmond Road between Louisa Road and North Milton Road has been reduced in weight limit to fifteen tons which equates to thirty thousand pounds.  Due to the structural integrity of the bridge the weight limit was reduced and the fines have been tripled.  The three vehicles that have been stopped on that bridge have an average weight that is double the posted reduced weight limit.
