Route 29 South in Albemarle County will Close Briefly on Thursday

Tree removal work will require 15-minute closure of southbound lanes

Removal of a damaged tree will require a brief closure of Route 29 southbound on Thursday morning in the North Garden area of Albemarle County.
Approximately one half-mile south of Route 692 (Plank Road), both southbound lanes on Route 29 will be closed for 15 minutes for removal of a large poplar tree damaged by lightning and subsequent decay. The tree, located adjacent to the Route 29 travel lanes as well as high-voltage power lines, has lost much of its structural strength and poses a safety hazard, especially under high winds or ice.

Mid-morning on Thursday, Pittman Tree Company, a contractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation, will drop the tree parallel to the roadway. While work occurs overhead, traffic will be stopped at a safe distance from the work zone, and will resume once the tree is on the ground.

Signage is currently in place on Route 29 to notify motorists of the closure. Motorists should expect delays and be prepared to stop, or use an alternate route.

Real-time road conditions and weather forecasts are available on VDOT’s traffic and travel Web site, The site also has live traffic camera images for many major highways, including Interstate 64, I-66 and Routes 29 and 250 in Central Virginia. Motorists can call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for road and traffic conditions on all major highways in the state.
