Construction Will Begin July 5 on Georgetown Road

Southbound lane will be closed through August 25; motorists should anticipate delays, congestion
The afternoon of July 5, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Vess Excavating, Ltd. of Charlottesville will begin the project to make pedestrian improvements on Route 656 (Georgetown Road) in Albemarle County. The $2.7 million construction contract was awarded in April.

The project is designed to provide safer pedestrian facilities in the 0.8-mile stretch between Route 743 (Hydraulic Road) and Route 654 (Barracks Road). Once completed, the existing asphalt pathway on the west side of Georgetown Road will be replaced by a five-foot wide concrete sidewalk and curb and gutter. Four marked pedestrian crossings will also be added.

Georgetown Road will be closed in the southbound direction from July 5 through August 25 while construction proceeds. The summer closure was chosen to minimize impacts to school traffic. Additional grading, excavation, lighting and signal work will occur after the road reopens, not to exceed the project’s September 23 completion date.

During the closure, detour signage will be in place to direct motorists from Hydraulic Road to Route 29 south to Barracks Road. Motorists should anticipate congestion and delays and allow extra travel time when heading to points south of Hydraulic Road.

The Georgetown Road corridor is a well-developed residential area with 16,000 vehicles using the road each day, according to 2009 data. Pedestrians, bicyclists and a substantial number of Albemarle County Public Schools students utilize the existing walking path, which is in poor condition. Tree roots growing up through the path present a tripping hazard, and its 30-inch width does not meet current ADA standards.

More information about the project can be found on VDOT’s web site,
