Let "Stay Local, Play Local" Create Your Perfect Backyard Vacation

Expanded Campaign to Help Residents with Summer Entertainment Planning

Stay Local Play LocalLocal officials today launched a summer tourism partnership called “Stay Local, Play Local” sponsored by the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau (CACVB).  The goal of “Stay Local, Play Local” is to inspire citizens to discover and experience the wide variety of free and low cost activities appealing to all age ranges and interests that our area has to offer.  This summer’s campaign builds on last year’s backyard vacation program by expanding the appealing, convenient options that will help residents save on gas costs during the summer vacation season and will keep tourism dollars in our area, benefiting local businesses and attractions.

The campaign has a dedicated web site, as well as a Facebook page and a Twitter presence, @mybackyardvaca to engage local residents to explore our community this summer.   Subscribers will receive a regular enews bulletin alerting them to interesting new backyard vacation possibilities.  In addition, the Charlottesville Newsplex will be running a Charlottesville specific PSA tailored to local residents throughout the summer.  The PSA can be found at

“We are pleased to launch “Stay Local Play Local” as families are making their summer plans, it will be convenient for residents to get ideas and advice for fun, low cost local activities that will save them time, money and the hassles of an extended road trip,” said Kurt Burkhart, CACVB Director.

“Stay Local Play Local” builds on the fact that when you live in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, you don’t have to go anywhere else to enjoy a very special vacation. For great activities – indoors and out – our community has it all! Swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, canoeing, skateboarding, playing tennis – whatever you’re looking for – the program helps you find it for free or at very little cost within a short drive (or bus ride) from home.

Organizers of the initiative will continue to partner with area businesses, entertainment venues, and attractions to offer residents an expanded list of options and special deals through the summer.  Residents are encouraged to check back with the website and social media sites for special announcements and updates.
