Albemarle Police Caution Area Residents about Craigslist Scams

The Albemarle County Police has fielded calls for service and documented two different types of scams that are taking place within the community.  The first scam involves Craigslist; in this particular scam, legitimate rental properties or houses that are for sale by credible realtors are being listed on Craigslist by scam artists.  The suspect in these scams asks for a deposit over email and sometimes in person.  Once the suspect has received the deposit, the victim has tried to gain entry to the property and is unable to do so.

The second scam involves telemarketers; victims are receiving phone calls explaining to them that if they send money to the suspect, in return they will receive a large sum of cash.

The Police Department is encouraging citizens to be mindful of these scams and to take some of the following precautionary steps when dealing with these individuals:

  •  Ask for a phone number and advise the caller that  you will call them back
  • Ask if they are members of the Better Business Bureau, if so confirm with the BBB
  • Ask what Realty Company they are employed with
  • Ask for their Realtor Identification number and confirm with the Realty Company
  • Confirm with Realty Company that this is a legitimate listing.
