Berkmar Drive Traffic Affected by Emergency Work

One lane will be closed west of Route 29 beginning June 1 to replace storm water pipe

Route 1403 (Berkmar Drive) in Albemarle County will be limited to one lane of traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 1. The lane closure is necessary so a contractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation can replace a pipe that carries storm water under the road. The pipe washed out during the recent heavy rains.

On Wednesday morning the westbound lane will be closed; traffic will alternate using the eastbound lane controlled by flaggers. Once the work is completed on the westbound side the lane closure will be shifted to the other lane so the pipe replacement can be completed. The work should be finished and the road reopened by late afternoon on Friday, June 3.

Motorists turning onto Berkmar Drive from Route 29 or traveling on Berkmar should be alert for signs directing them through the work zone. They should also expect some congestion and minor delays during peak traffic periods.

Real-time road conditions and weather forecasts are available on VDOT’s traffic and travel Web site, The site also has live traffic camera images for many major highways, including Interstate 64, I-66 and Routes 29 and 250 in Central Virginia. Motorists can call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for road and traffic conditions on all major highways in the state. Call 800-367-ROAD (367-7623) 24 hours a day to report highway-related problems or request information about Virginia’s highways.
