Local Food Hub and Albemarle County Announce “Fresh from the Farm” Courtyard Market to Begin May 4

On Wednesday, May 4, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm, Albemarle County and the Local Food Hub will kick off the “Fresh from the Farm” Courtyard Market, a unique partnership that will offer county staff regular access to fresh, healthful, locally-grown food at the County Office Building.   Following next week’s kick-off, the Courtyard Market will be in operation the third Thursday of every month from June through October.

Proceeds from the Market will go to support the Local Food Hub’s Senior Apprenticeship Program. This program offers full-time, paid, f
arming apprenticeships to young adults who aspire to be farmers in the area. The apprenticeship program offers hands-on grower training from seed to harvest, as well as business-based experiences like wholesale and farmers’ market sales experience and business plan development. The Courtyard Market idea follows a successful one-time farmers market managed by the Local Food Hub in the County Office Building lobby last summer.

“We are delighted to be able to support our community’s next generation of farmers while also providing access to fresh, locally-grown food to our employees here at the County Office Building,” said County Executive Tom Foley.  “We very much appreciate the Local Food Hub’s partnership in creating the Courtyard Market and their ongoing efforts to strengthen our agricultural enterprises.”

The Local Food Hub works to secure our local food supply by supporting small, family farms; increasing the amount of fresh food available to our community; and inspiring the next generation of farms.

For community members, the Local Food Hub offers food growing workshops, volunteer opportunities, and on-farm events. Don’t miss their upc
oming Plant Sale on Saturday, May 7th at the Educational Farm at Maple Hill. For more information visit:
