4/20/2011

The City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) will host the first Many Plans, One Community Open House to begin the update process for the City of Charlottesville's Comprehensive Plan, the County of Albemarle's Comprehensive Plan & the Regional Long Range Transportation Plan. Although the City, County and University have previously collaborated on smaller planning projects, this is the first time that the localities have jointly partnered in reviewing their comprehensive plans.

Details on this launch event are as follows:

WHAT:          Community Open House for the Launch of the Updates of the Charlottesville and Albemarle Comprehensive Plans and the Regional Long Range Transportation Plan

WHERE:        Albemarle County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road (2nd floor)

WHEN:          Wednesday, April 27, 2011, open house from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

PURPOSE:    For the public to learn more about existing comprehensive and transportation plans and participate in the public process to inform their updates.

Many Plans, One Community is the portal for information exchange and public input that will inform the updates of the Charlottesville and Albemarle County comprehensive plans, the Charlottesville Albemarle Metropolitan Planning Organization Long Range Transportation Plan update and the development of a regional Livable Communities Plan.  Many Plans, One Community will be a one-stop shop for all information about each of these four different plans, as well as a forum for the public to provide input and feedback throughout the process.   This process will extend limited staff resources, encourage collaboration, facilitate public information sharing and increase transparency across municipal boundaries.  With the launch of these plan updates, the April 27th “Community Kick-off Event” is the first opportunity for the public to be involved in the process.

“We are very excited about the possibilities for regional planning provided by this effort,” said Albemarle County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ann Mallek. “This initiative will support local collaboration on important community issues that will enhance even more the great quality of life we have in this region.”

Charlottesville Mayor Davis Norris noted, “This is another example of where the City and Albemarle County are using a shared vision and are working together to make life for the residents in our community even better.”

The purpose of the Many Plans/One Community initiative, which is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is to support livability and build economic competitiveness by connecting housing with good jobs, quality schools and transportation.
