Board to Discuss Proposed Redistricting Plan Options

The Board of Supervisors will hold a work session on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, on two proposed redistricting plan options. The purpose of the work session is to consider both plan options and to direct staff to proceed to public hearing on one of the plans and the implementing ordinance. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hold at least one advertised public hearing on the proposed redistricting plan and adopt the plan by May 4th. The remaining schedule will be determined at the April 6th work session.
Redistricting is required every 10 years following the public release of decennial census data. As part of the redistricting process, the Board reviews and redraws the boundaries of the County’s six magisterial districts and voter precincts and evaluates the locations of polling places to comply with State and Federal law. One of the primary purposes for redrawing the magisterial district boundaries is to re-balance the County’s population so that each district’s population is as equal as possible to every other district, with a permissible deviation not to exceed +/-5%. The members of the Board of Supervisors and the School Board are elected from the six magisterial districts.

The executive summary for the April 6, 2011 work session is available online by clicking here. The executive summary includes maps of the proposed magisterial district and precinct boundary changes under the two plan options, an analysis of each plan’s compliance with the redistricting guidelines previously adopted by the Board, and demographic information. Copies of the executive summary may also be obtained from the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, Fourth Floor, County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, Virginia (434) 296-5843.
