Weight Limit on Route 250 Bridge at Shadwell Reduced to 15 Tons

Inspection reveals deterioration of deck; heavy vehicles must use alternate routes

Signs displaying the new weight restriction were posted today. Additional signs directing vehicles weighing more than 15 tons to use alternate routes will also be posted on Route 250 and nearby roads.

VDOT plans to make repairs to the bridge deck beginning on Friday, March 4. That work will necessitate lane closures beginning at 9 p.m. with traffic controlled by flaggers. The repair work will continue through the weekend, weather permitting, and be completed by 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6. One lane of traffic in alternating directions will be maintained across the bridge.

The department is also developing plans to replace the entire superstructure of the bridge, including the deck and supporting members. A public hearing to provide information about the superstructure replacement project is planned for early April.

The Route 250 bridge over the Buckingham Branch Railroad tracks at Shadwell carries approximately 15,000 vehicles per day. It was posted for legal-weight loads in 2010, meaning that large trucks with overweight permits have not been able to use it since that posting. The center turn lane was also closed to traffic at that time due to deterioration of the concrete deck. The bridge, which was built in 1939, is inspected by VDOT every six months.

Real-time road conditions and weather forecasts are available on VDOT’s traffic and travel web site, The site also has live traffic camera images for many major highways, including Interstate 64, I-66 and Routes 29 and 250 in Central Virginia. Motorists can call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for road and traffic conditions on all major highways in the state. Call 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) to report road hazards or ask transportation-related questions.
