2/14/2011

The National Weather Service has issued a “Red Flag” warning for Albemarle County. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.

The following conditions are expected:

  • HUMIDITY -- Minimum afternoon relative humidity of 20 to 30 percent
  • WINDS – West 20 to 30 MPH sustained. Gusts of 45 to 55 MPH
  • FUEL MOISTURE -- 7 TO 8 Percent

The County Fire Marshal’s Office strongly urges citizens not to conduct open burning while such conditions exist. For more information please contact the Department of Fire Rescue at (434) 296-5833.
