Recent Mailbox Incidents Cause Safety Concern
12/15/2010

Investigators with the Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office are working to collect evidence in two separate attempted mailbox bombing incidents (one in Carrsbrook and one on Powell Creek Drive) in Albemarle County from overnight involving explosive devices made from soda bottles. Officials want to caution residents to call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious and to not attempt to move any type of device. At least one of these devices failed to detonate and there is concern for public safety if such a device is mistaken for trash and moved or picked up—it could detonate in someone’s hand and cause caustic liquid to burn or injure the unsuspecting party. Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity should call 9-1-1.
