Fire Chief Urges Against Open Burning Due to Dry Conditions

Albemarle County Fire Officials are urging citizens not to conduct any open burning. Citing weather conditions over the past several weeks, specifically a lack of rain, decrease in humidity and an increase in winds, Fire Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston asks citizens to voluntarily suspend open burning until conditions improve. “Right now any outdoor fire has the potential to spread very quickly and cause significant damage”, said Eggleston. “We are asking County residents to recognize the dangers and postpone any open burning until the area receives measurable rainfall.” Despite rain events in many regions during the last two weeks, short-term precipitation deficits remain across the majority of the Commonwealth according to the Virginia Drought Monitoring Task force. The US Drought Monitor indicates “abnormally dry” to “moderate drought” conditions exist in approximately 86% of the Commonwealth. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call the Department of Fire Rescue at (434) 296-5833.
