County Announces Parks and Rec Chief Retirement

Albemarle County is announcing the retirement of Pat Mullaney, Director of Parks and Recreation, effective December 31.   Mullaney joined the County as a recreation program coordinator in 1978 after graduating from Frostburg State College with a degree in recreation administration.  He was promoted to Director in 1981. 

“Pat has been a strong and visionary leader for our Parks and Recreation Department and many of the most popular amenities that local residents enjoy are a direct result of his efforts,” said County Executive Bob Tucker in announcing the retirement.  “Many acres of parkland, miles of trails and greenways, and swimming, boating and fishing options have come to fruition during Pat’s tenure.”

Career Highlights/Accomplishments:

  • Overseeing the expansion of the park system from 1200 acres in 1981 to over 3300 acres currently, Including the additions of:
    • Greenwood Community Center
    • Scottsville Community Center
    • Meadows Community Center
    • Ivy Creek Natural Area
    • Charlotte Humphris Park
    • Darden Towe Park
    • Walnut Creek Park
    • Simpson Park
    • Patricia Ann Byrom Forest Preserve Park
    • Preddy Creek Trail Park

       
  • The long established school and general government partnership which has provided the many recreation facility improvements at school sites to the benefit of the school and community and significantly increased the number of athletic fields and gymnasiums available for community use.

     
  • The many partnerships (City, Crozet Park, Town of Scottsville, DGIF, YMCA, youth and adult athletic program providers and others )  that have provided quality facilities and programs to the residents of the County at a relatively low cost to taxpayers.
