Hillsdale Road Safety Improvements Complete

Albemarle County is announcing the completion of major safety improvements to Hillsdale Drive that will increase pedestrian safety in an area frequented extensively by walkers and bikers including a significant number of senior citizens.

The project provides two new pedestrian signaled crosswalks, one across Rio Road joining Northfield Road and Hillsdale Drive and the second one crossing Hillsdale at the intersection of Rio Road and Hillsdale.

The project also provides over 1,500 feet of new sidewalk starting on Greenbrier Drive and extending east on Hillsdale Drive toward Rio Road and ending at Mall Drive, including three lighted landscaped crosswalks.  There are also new sidewalks on Old Brook Road and along the Fashion Square Mall on Rio Road.

New medians were designed to slow traffic on Hillsdale along with providing a refuge in the median with hand rails to provide safe crossing.

The project began in November, 2009 and was completed last month with a slight delay due to a snow delay during the winter.  Over half of the $500,000 project was funded by a federal safety grant.  The project came in significantly under budget due to the favorable bid climate at the time this project went out for bid and due to the County project team keeping change orders below 2% of construction costs.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide these significant safety improvements to the many walkers and bikers who use this area,” said County Executive Bob Tucker in announcing the project completion.
