Police Chief Search Process Announced

Albemarle County announced today that it is beginning a comprehensive search process for a new Police Chief to replace John Miller who is retiring effective September 30 after 21 years of service in this capacity.

In order to maximize citizen input in the selection of Albemarle’s next Police Chief, an on-line survey will be posted on the county website and a series of focus groups will be conducted to obtain views and perspectives from citizens on what they perceive to be important in the selection of a new Chief.  Beginning August 2nd, citizens will have the opportunity to complete an on-line survey which will be posted on the County’s website at  The survey will be available for a period of two weeks at which time the County will review the results in order to guide the interview and selection process.

There will also be several focus groups with community stakeholders to allow a forum for direct input on what are important qualities to consider in a new Chief.  Likewise, employees of the Albemarle County Police Department will have the opportunity to provide input through an on-line survey and focus groups.

“We believe that it is critical that our citizens and staff have the opportunity to share their thoughts and priorities for a new police chief,” said County Executive Bob Tucker.  “Results from the survey will play an important role in helping determine expectations as we move forward in the hiring process.”

The survey will be available at beginning Monday morning, August 2, and running through Friday, August 13.
