The Custodian performs routine and non-routine cleaning in an assigned area or areas to provide the proper building sanitation by following prescribed cleaning frequencies. Provides project work periodically and responds to other miscellaneous requests submitted by faculty and staff. Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Removing and disposing of trash;
  • Sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and restroom sanitation;
  • Cleaning glass, mirrors, walls, vents, fixtures, chalkboards and baseboards;
  • Restocking supplies and sanitizing drinking fountains;
  • Responding to a variety of requests from faculty and staff which include setting up for meetings and class functions, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries;
  • Responding to accidents or potential safety hazards;
  • Opening and/or securing the building;
  • Maintaining the building perimeter.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires knowledge of or the ability to learn routine and non-routine cleaning methods, procedures, and equipment usage. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to get along well with others. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, and some building cleaning experience. Must have a valid Virginia driver's license.
 
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS & NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Cleaning and maintenance work performed typically while walking and standing; some lifting and carrying of objects weighing 12-50 pounds; some furniture moving; occasional operation of vehicles, shop equipment, power equipment, and hand tools requiring manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination. Work environment exposes employee to potential minor injuries and frequently adverse weather. Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous substances. Frequent and regular contacts with internal staff and the outside public for the purpose of providing custodial services.
 
SALARY:   $9.41 - $11.29/hour, depending on experience and qualifications plus shift differential for evening and night shifts.

HOURS:     Evening or Night (2:30pm-11:00pm, or 3:30pm-12:00am)
