Voter Registration Requirements
Registering to vote in Virginia requires that you submit a form. This can be done in person or by mail, and the form is available on line and at many government offices around the state. Registration is available in our office, located in the 5th Street County Office Building, 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22902, from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
You are eligible to register to vote in Virginia if you meet all the requirements below:
- A Citizen of the United States
- At least 18 years old by the next general election
- A resident of Virginia (a person who has come to Virginia for temporary purposes and intends to return to another state is not considered a resident for voting purposes)
- Not be registered and planning to vote in anoter state
- Have had your voting rights restored if you have ever been covicted of a felony or been judged to be mentally incapacitated.

Registration forms are located outside of the Electoral Board Office, Room 130 in the Mcintire Road County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22902. The Elections Manager is normally available for in-person Voter Registration. You may call 434-296-5863 to verify availability. In addition, voter registration forms are normally available at local libraries, schools, and service agencies. Please report change of name or address:
To remain a qualified voter, Virginia law requires that you notify your local voter registration office of any changes to your name or address. This must be done before the registration books close for the next election (22 days prior to the election).
You may use the State Board online registration site to update your information.
You may submit your change notice in person at our office at 1600 5th Street, Charlotteville, VA, 22902 or by mail to our mailing address: PMB 404, 536 Pantops Center, Charlottesville, VA, 22911, or by fax to 434-972-4178. The notice must include your signature to be valid. Notice cannot be given over the telephone or by email. The notice can be made by submitting a new Virginia Voter Registration form, or by a letter. If you write a letter, please include your full name (both old and new if a name change), your new residence address, your previous registration address, your birth date or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, and a signature and date.
