Absentee Ballot Applications are now being accepted in the Registrar's Office at the 5th Street County Office Building.

Absentee ballots are available approximately 45 days prior to a November General Election, and 30 days prior to a primary. The Registrar's office is open the two Saturdays prior to a November General election for in-person voting, and the Saturday before a primary or special election.
Citizens who will be absent from Albemarle County on Election Day, or who are unable to go to the polls because of any reason currently accepted under Virginia law can apply to receive an absentee ballot by mail. Another alternative is to vote an in-person absentee ballot. In-person absentee voting is conducted in the Voter Registration and Elections Office during the 45 days preceding a general election, 30 days preceding a primary or special election.

How Do I Apply for an Absentee Ballot?. You can download and print the application form, complete it, and either mail or fax it to us at 434-972-4178. We cannot accept electronic (computer) submissions. Please see the State Board of Elections website for more information.
All U.S. Citizens are entitled to vote in Federal Elections (the office of President and Vice President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives). If you are an active duty member of the uniformed services, or if you are regularly employed abroad but maintain a permanent domicile address in Albemarle to which you plan to return at some future date, you are eligible to receive a full ballot, including all state and local offices and issues. Please complete the Virginia Absentee Ballot Application. If you do not have a domicile address and you are not a member of the uniformed services or a dependent of a member but your last address in the United States was in Virginia, you are still eligible for a Federal ballot. Please contact our office for a Virginia Temporary Registration and Absentee Ballot Application. Your name will be placed on a temporary list for the specific election only, to be removed immediately following the election.
