VOTER REGISTRATION AND ELECTIONS
GENERAL INFORMATION

In conjunction with the Electoral Board, the department is responsible for the administration of all Federal, State and local elections.  This entails recruiting and training over 300 Election Officials, preparing 28 polling places, preparing and distributing all voting equipment and election materials, and establishing an in-office absentee voter precinct for the 45 days preceding each general election.

The Department of Voter Registration and Elections provides information and materials for candidates for office.  Candidates are required to file several campaign-related documents with this office, including regular reports of campaign contributions and expenditures.  Independent candidates must file petitions of qualified voters in order to be included on the ballot.  The department is responsible for determining the acceptability of signatures on petitions.

One of our most important mandates is to "...educate the general public concerning registration and encourage registration by the general public." (Section 24.2-114, Code of Virginia)  To that end, the department offers special voter registration sites, visits all Albemarle County High Schools to educate students and register qualified seniors, offers educational programs to interested groups, and maintains this website.
