The mission of Albemarle County's Animal Control Unit is to support responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals. Animal Control officers (ACOs) are charged with enforcing county ordinances and state laws related to the health and safety of domestic animals. Animal Control officers provide a variety of services to include conducting criminal investigations and removing stray, lost, injured or abused domestic animals. Our ACOs assist the local health department with the quarantine of animals and assist them in the control of rabies and other diseases spread by animals. Our Animal Control Unit typically provides daytime and early evening coverage and are available to respond to emergency situations after hours at the discretion of a police supervisor. Albemarle County Animal Control officers are civilian employees who have specific enforcement powers covering applicable state laws and county ordinances governing animal care.
