AN ACCREDITED LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY
SKILLS PROFICIENCY PROGRAM


The goal of the Albemarle County Police Department Skill Proficiency Program is to develop and retain “highly” qualified Police Officers, to deliver effective services to the citizens of Albemarle County.  The program is designed to:

Provide a system that will attract and retain highly competent individuals to the Police Officer Profession.

Provide police officers with skills that are more consistent with the critical services the Police Department provides to the community.

Fulfill one of the basic values of the Albemarle County Police Department which is the belief that “the Department’s greatest potential is achieved by supporting the Development of its employees and their active participation in the development and implementation of Departmental Programs”.

Provide an alternative incentive for Police Officers who do not desire supervisory positions.

Officers entering into the program must meet specific departmental criteria to qualify for each level within the program.  Officers who qualify for Level One will receive a 5% pay increase and move from Pay Grade 13 to Pay Grade 14.  Officers who qualify for Level Two will receive an additional 6%.  Officers who qualify for Level three will receive an additional 6% increase for a total pay increase of 17%.

Level One-  Police Officer First Class

Level Two-  Senior Police Officer

Level Three-  Master Police Officer
