 ACADEMIC TESTER/EVALUATOR
ALBEMARLE-CHARLOTTESVILLE REGIONAL JAIL

The Academic Tester/Evaluator performs professional and intermediate work preparing and delivering diagnostic and standardized educational testing services to incarcerated individuals for the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail (ACRJ) in accordance with State, Local, and Federal statutes, individual test protocols, and ACRJ’s standard operating procedures within a correctional environment with the goal of maximizing the offender’s educational experience during incarceration. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed, develops work methods and delivery sequences, and is under the general supervision of the Education Director.  The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. The Academic Tester/Evaluator will provide effective diagnostic and standardized educational testing services to incarcerated adults to determine / assess eligibility for educational programs including Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Diploma (GED), and Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) to assigned individuals. Academic Tester/Evaluator tasks include, but are not limited to, the following areas of responsibilities:

  • Administers academic tests to eligible offenders, including TABE, GED Ready, GED, and CRC.
  • Maintains security of testing materials/ equipment at all times.
  • Develops and posts Rosters for testing sessions.
  • Scores and interprets results of educational testing.
  • Maintains all academic testing files and records, including updating databases.
  • Maintains adequate testing supplies and materials for both paper-and- pencil and electronic test delivery.
  • Attends and actively participates in meetings and trainings pertinent to position.
  • Maintains certifications to administer assigned tests.
  • Adheres to all institutional policy and procedures as set forth by ACRJ, to include compliance with work schedules and timekeeping requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of general standardized testing procedures. Knowledge of, and familiarity with, an array of diagnostic tests, e.g. Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), GED Ready, GED, and WorkKeys for Career Readiness Certificate (CRC). Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, and evaluating  test data to assist with eligibility for and placement in educational services based on such data or information. Requires giving information, guidance, or assistance to teachers to facilitate learning tasks being accurately accomplished. In addition to the requirement of possessing proficient computer usage skills; this position necessitates the handling or use of machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as, but not limited to, GED testing computer stations, FAX machines, copiers, telephones, or similar equipment, to include minor servicing of office machines; Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems; Requires knowledge and use of basic quantitative and measurable math skills as they relate to the position’s administrative tasks; Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format and grammar, speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.  Requires doing clerical, manual, or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Valid VA state driver’s license. Hold, or be eligible for, certification to administer TABE, GED, GED Ready, and CRC.

EDUCATION:  Minimum of a High School Diploma. One to three years of experience preferred but not required in an adult corrections setting.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations. The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards. The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception.  Responsible for guiding others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a moderate to highly fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.

SALARY: Part time ( 16 hours per week), hourly rate with commensurate with experience..
