The goal of the Education Department at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail is to provide high quality educational programs to those incarcerated here. We strive to do this by offering academic classes that are geared towards each individual student’s needs in a safe, secure student-centered environment.

Education has been shown to reduce recidivism, or the likelihood of an inmate returning to jail.  In a recent Rand Corporation study of recidivism rates nationwide, attaining a GED while incarcerated was shown to reduce recidivism by 55%. Albemarle- Charlottesville Regional Jail follows the Virginia Department of Corrections policy established by the Virginia Legislature that anyone without a GED or High School Diploma is mandated to attend academic classes.

The Education Department at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail offers classes in Adult Basic Education, GED/ High School Equivalency, Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Career Readiness Certification (CRC). All academic classes are taught by licensed professional educators. The Career Readiness Certification (CRC) is a nationally recognized certificate program that allows potential employers to gauge an applicant’s current level of job readiness skills.  Class placement for all academic classes is determined by scores obtained on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE).
