The Classification Department is responsible for assisting offenders while they are incarcerated with navigating the criminal justice system, maintaining contact with family and friends, ensuring their needs are appropriately addressed and they are housed safely and securely.

One of our primary objectives is to ensure that each offender is carefully screened or classified prior to being housed within the facility. The classification staff interviews each offender to collect and analyze information such as current and previous criminal behavior, medical and mental health issues, education level achieved, individual temperament and any criminogenic needs that can be addressed through proper programming. The offender is then housed to an appropriate section of the facility based on this interview and other relevant information.

In addition the Classification Department has case managers that provide offenders with information and services so they can contact their attorneys and the courts as well as other criminal justice agencies. Some of the assistance we provide includes, notary public service, copying, coordinating access to the inmate law library, provide requested copies of some legal documents, and addresses to courts or other law enforcement agencies. We do not provide legal advice.

Visitation

The Classification Department also aids inmates in maintaning relationships with family and friends by maintaining their visitation lists and coordinating verified emergency phone calls.

  1. We are not allowed to add family and friends to an inmate's visitation list.
  2. ONLY the inmate may request that a person be added to their visitation list
  3. If you want to visit an offender we suggest that you write the inmate and include your full name, complete address, and date of birth.

Funeral and Death-Bed Visits

We also assist in arranging funeral and death-bed visits for an offender's immediate family. ACRJ recognizes immediate family as the following: mother, father, sibling, spouse, and children.

  • In the event that a family member, as defined above, passes away or is gravely ill, please contact the Classification Department as soon as possible.
  • The jail is only authorized to perform a custodial transport (the inmate will be in full restraints and accompanied by two sworn armed staff at all times) of the inmate to a private viewing of the deceased or to the gravely ill person's bedside within a 35-mile radius of the jail at no cost.
  • All other requests such as furlough (a court ordered release from custody), a situation regarding an extended family member or close friend, or a viewing/visit beyond the 35-mile radius of the jail must be initiated through the court(s) that have jurisdiction over the offender.
  • All court ordered custodial transports will be subject to the payment of the costs associated with the transport. A cost estimate will be provided prior upon request.

Emergency Messages

We do not pass non-emergency related messages to inmates. We encourage all family and friends to set up IC SOLUTIONS phone accounts where all inmates have their own voicemail. You also have the option to write the inmate as often as possible. Visit ACRJ’s Inmate Telephone Services page for more information.
