Recycling helps preserve raw materials such as wood and metal and helps to reduce pollution.  Recycling preserves our present resources for the sake of future generations. There are three main points you should consider when it comes to recycling and personal responsibility.  These three rules are often referred to as the three R's. REDUCE your waste - buy things that can be reused or refilled.  Do not accept unnecessary bags and wrapping when you are shopping. RETURN...TAKE BACK returnables - bottles, car batteries, etc. RE-USE AND REPAIR rather than buy new. There are currently SIX recycling outlets available in our community. Curbside Recycling Program. The Albemarle County Recycling Ordinance, adopted September 15, 1993, requires trash haulers to provide curbside recycling to residents wishing to participate. Residents can recycle newspapers, magazines and catalogues in a separate bag for pickup by your trash hauler. For more information about individual hauler routes and dates/times of pickups, please contact your trash hauler.  For general information regarding this program, please call (434) 296-5816 for Albemarle's Chief of Public Works. Residents and businesses are encouraged to deposit old newspapers (and glossy inserts), magazines and catalogs at:   Sam's Club parking lot, located off Rt. 29 North (behind the Doubletree Hotel).  Open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.   Pantops Shopping Center located next to Roses Store, located off Rt. 250 East.  Open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. County residents can also use the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority's recycling centers:   Ivy Materials Utilization Center located on Route 637 (Dick Woods Road), 3 miles south of the I-64 (Ivy) Exit.  Residents can use the recycling center just before the scale house to recycle newspaper, magazines, catalogues and cardboard.   McIntire Road Recycling Center, located on McIntire Road just north of the Albemarle County Office Building.  Center users are strongly encouraged to source separate recyclables at the home/office, that way off-loading at McIntire is much easier!  In separate containers, McIntire accepts four categories of paper, three categories of glass bottles and jars, and one type each of metal food/beverage cans and plastic. The center operates at the following times: Tuesday through Friday -- 7:30 a.m. to 5:20 p.m.; Saturday -- 8:00 a.m. to 5:20 p.m.; and Sunday -- 12:30 p.m. to 5:20 p.m. Call the Recycling Information Hotline at (434) 906-0763 or visit http://www.rivanna.org/ for more detailed information.   Paper Sort Facility, located on the grounds of Coiners' Scrap Iron and Metal, Inc. in Charlottesville. This RSWA-owned center accepts newspaper, magazines, catalogs and mixed paper.  Call the Recycling Information Hotline at (434) 906-0763 for more detailed information.
