DOG LICENSES 

All dogs in Albemarle County must have a dog license after their first rabies shot.  A puppy needs to have his or her first rabies shot at the age of 4 months.  This initial shot is usually good for one year.  Thereafter, the dog will need to have their shot every three years.

Albemarle County dog licenses go on sale November 1st of every year.  These license must be purchased and on your dog by January 31st of the following year.  The license must be displayed on the dogs collar at all times.

In order to obtain a dog license you will need to bring the rabies certificate from the veterinarian indicating the expiration date.  This form must be brought each year to purchase a license.   Please provide your current physical address and phone number. (no post office boxes please)

If your dog is missing call the S.P.C.A. at (434) 973-5959 or the Animal Control officer at (434) 977-9041 and file a lost dog report. (Your dog may have lost his/her collar and may be taken to the S.P.C.A.)
