ALBEMARLE COUNTY
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES

CLICK HERE to pay your property taxes on-line

Albemarle County levies a Personal property tax on all taxable tangible personal property located in the County.  Items of personal property that are taxable include:  motor vehicles, motorcycles, boats, boat trailers, mobile homes, aircraft, campers, and utility trailers.

The County of Albemarle is a pro-rating locality.   This means tax is levied on vehicles by date of purchase or date registered in the Virginia until the date the vehicle is retitled out of state, sold, junked, or moved to another locality.

Vehicles are assessed by the trade-in value of the January issue of the N.A.D.A. Official Used Car Guide of the current year.  The tax rate is $4.28 per every $100 of the assessed value less the current year credit from the State of Virginia Car Tax Relief plan. Personal Property tax is due twice a year.  Due dates are June 5th and December 5th.

When moving from another state into Albemarle County please make sure you:

  • Register the vehicle(s) with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Get a Virginia State Inspection. This can be done at most service stations, look for the Inspection Station sign posted.
  • Bring the Virginia Registration card to the County office building and register the vehicle.
  • When moving from another prorating locality please make sure to:
  • Bring a copy of paid tax receipt from previous locality as well as your vehicle registration to the County office building.
  • Notify the previous locality of your move, so adjustments can be made for personal property taxes.

**Taxation will begin as of your move to the County**

When moving to a non-prorating locality please make sure to:

  • Take a copy of paid tax receipt from locality and your vehicle registration to the taxing office in that jurisdiction.
  • Notify Albemarle of your move, so taxing status can be changed as of the end of the year.

**Taxation will cease as of Dec 31 current year**

When moving from a non-prorating locality please make sure to:

  • Bring a copy of paid tax receipt from previous locality and your vehicle registration to the County office building.
  • Notify the previous locality of your move.
