Carrsbrook Drive Pipe Replacement Project Update
11/13/16

Reminder that a full closure of Carrsbrook Drive between Indian Spring Road and Marlboro Court will begin at 7:30 AM Monday morning, November 16, 2015 for the duration of the project. The project is expected to be completed within 4 weeks.

This is a joint-project with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Due to the deteriorating condition of the pipes and concerns about a future failure, the project is proceeding as soon as possible.  We regret the inconvenience this will cause, especially over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

East of the closure, motorists should follow the posted detour via Route 652 (Westmoreland Road/Old Brook Road). West of the closure, Carrsbrook Drive will remain accessible from Route 29. Access to all driveway entrances will be maintained. Message boards are in place to alert motorists of the upcoming closure.

A pre-construction meeting was held with the ACSA and VDOT this past week and in an effort to complete this important project before the winter and Christmas holidays, the project will begin next week. Please note the following schedule:

  • Week of November 2 – surveying and waterline preparation work will begin. Partial lane closures will occur during this week but traffic in both directions will be allowed through the work zone. Expect and plan for delays.
  • Week of November 9 – Detour signage will be posted and water line outage will occur (Nov 11). The ACSA has issued a letter to all residents affected by the water outage with further details. Partial lane closures will occur during this week but traffic in both directions will be allowed through the work zone. Expect and plan for delays.

Construction and Temporary Closure of Carrsbrook Drive
7/16/2015

The Board of Supervisors has approved a construction project along Carrsbrook Drive to replace a failing underground pipe between the upper and lower lakes along Carrsbrook Drive. The Virginia Department of Transportation and Albemarle County’s Office of Facilities Development will begin construction in the next several weeks. Construction is anticipated to last 4 to 5 weeks.

During the replacement, Carrsbrook Drive will be closed to through-traffic at the dam between North Indian Springs Road and Marlboro Court for approximately 3 weeks as the road is open-cut to allow for the excavation and removal of two existing 42-inch deteriorated pipes and the installation of a new 60-inch pipe, manhole and riprap outlet channel.

In addition to the road closure, a 6-inch waterline serving the area will be taken out of service for approximately 8 hours ahead of construction because the waterline conflicts with the repairs. The Albemarle County Service Authority will send letters to affected properties in advance of the outage. Notification boards will also be posted 7 days prior to the outage.

Construction and closure is expected to be completed while schools are on summer break to mitigate impacts to buses/school traffic. The closure will be coordinated with police, fire departments and school summer programs. VDOT has determined that the detour route to be used will be Northfield Road, which connects to Rio Road. Notification boards will be posted 7 days prior to the closing and detour signage will be posted when construction begins.
