Internal Recycling
Recycling supports the County’s commitments to both pollution prevention and climate protection. We have increased the types of materials employees are able to recycle in County Office Buildings. In addition to cardboard, boxboard, and most types of paper, employees can recycle ink cartridges, most types of batteries, and any electronic waste (e-waste).
E-waste from the County is recycled or reused by Computer Recycling of Virginia. According to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) E-Waste website, certain E-Waste components may contain small amounts of regulated heavy metals, including lead, silver, barium, cadmium, chromium and mercury. Although there is currently no requirement to recycle this equipment, this is an evolving area of the state regulations, and changes are expected in the next few years.
The General Services Department has set a goal of increasing the volume of materials reused or recycled from County buildings by 5% annually. Recycled quantities from 2007 are:

The McIntire Recycling Center now accepts compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), batteries and cell phones.
