Internal Recycling

RecyclingRecycling supports the County’s commitments to both pollution prevention and climate protection. We have increased the types of materials employees are able to recycle in County Office Buildings. In addition to cardboard, boxboard, and most types of paper, employees can recycle ink cartridges, most types of batteries, and any electronic waste (e-waste).

Computer Recycling of VirginiaE-waste from the County is recycled or reused by Computer Recycling of Virginia. According to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) E-Waste website, certain E-Waste components may contain small amounts of regulated heavy metals, including lead, silver, barium, cadmium, chromium and mercury.  Although there is currently no requirement to recycle this equipment, this is an evolving area of the state regulations, and changes are expected in the next few years.

The General Services Department has set a goal of increasing the volume of materials reused or recycled from County buildings by 5% annually. Recycled quantities from 2007 are:

  • E-Waste - 6,730 lbs
  • Batteries - 121 lbs
  • Mercury containing lamps - 600 lbs
  • Ballasts - 150 lbs
  • Cardboard - 13 tons
  • Paper - 63.05 tons
  • Co-mingled glass/metal/plastic drink containers - 622.26 cu.ft.
