County Improves BOS Audio Streaming Technology; Planning Commission Now Offering Podcasting

Albemarle County continues its efforts to improve accessibility options in making major meetings available to the public. The Board of Supervisors launched its live audio streaming program in 2012; and while the program was successful, the advertisements that periodically interrupted the live meeting proved to be a distraction.

Soil Removal to Resume on I-64 at Afton on Monday

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s emergency project on Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain will resume on Monday, May 20 and continue through Thursday, May 23. Intermittent closures of I-64 will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day and continue throughout the day.

Virginia Sales Tax Holiday for Hurricane Preparedness Items Starts May 25

Virginia residents can prepare for the upcoming hurricane season and save money at the same time. The Virginia sales-tax holiday on emergency items such as batteries, flashlights, tarps and first-aid kits runs Saturday, May 25 through Friday, May 31.

Public Invited to Review Rt. 29 Bypass Interchange Concepts

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a citizen information meeting on Thursday, May 23 at the Holiday Inn Charlottesville (University Area) to provide the public an opportunity to review and comment on three design concepts for the southern interchange of the proposed Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass project.

Celebrate National Trails Day at Shenandoah National Park

Celebrate National Trails Day in Shenandoah National Park on Saturday, June 1.  In partnership with Shenandoah National Park, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) invites new hikers and experienced backpackers to learn new trail skills at PATC Trail Patrol’s “Beyond the Trailhead” event at Byrd Visitor Center (milepost 51 on Skyline Drive) from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Weather Again Postpones I-64 Work at Afton Mountain

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s emergency project to remove unstable soil from a slope above Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain has been suspended today and Tuesday due to weather conditions. There will be no restrictions on traffic on I-64 between Charlottesville and Waynesboro today or tomorrow.

Committee Appointed to Report on Need for Enhanced Community Services in Southern Part of the County

County Executive Thomas Foley and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pamela R. Moran have appointed an 11-member citizens advisory committee to develop recommendations for providing enhanced community services in the southern part of the county while sustaining the role of Yancey Elementary School as a neighborhood school.

Albemarle Police Release Enforcement Results from Foxfield Races

The Albemarle County Police Department reports a total of 33 arrests made during the Foxfield Races on April 27, 2013. In addition to these arrests, a total of 66 charges were placed.

Albemarle County Citizen Survey Set to be Mailed This Week

Albemarle County is one of many jurisdictions in the U.S. to participate in The National Citizen Survey™ in 2013. Within the next week, questionnaires will be sent to a random sample of 1,200 Albemarle households, asking for feedback on the quality and usefulness of county services.

Police Caution Drivers About Traffic Congestion Due to Foxfield Saturday

The Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) would like residents to be aware of some traffic congestion associated with the Spring running of the Foxfield Races which will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013.  This year, 15,000 – 25,000 people are expected to converge in Albemarle County to attend the event.  Gates will open at 9:00 a.m. and the first race is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.

VDOT's I-64 Emergency Project Will Continue Next Week

Intermittent traffic restrictions on Interstate 64 between Charlottesville and Waynesboro will resume next week during operations to remove unstable soil from Afton Mountain above the highway at milepost 100.3 in Albemarle County. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 29, traffic on I-64 will be restricted in both directions for 30-45 minutes.

County Police Partner with Martha Jefferson for Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, the Albemarle County Police Department, in conjunction with Martha Jefferson Hospital, will take part in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative. Drop off expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the following locations:  the Albemarle County Police Department on 5th Street, Martha Jefferson Hospital Outpatient Center on Pantops and the new Martha Jefferson Hospital ER on Profitt Road.

A Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, for the Democratic Party nominations for the offices of: Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and Attorney General of Virginia. Absentee voting for the June 11 primary election begins on Friday, April 26, 2013. The Deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday, May 20, at 5 pm.

Albemarle County Local Government Offices Closed Friday

Albemarle County Local Government offices will be closed on Friday, April 12, 2013 in observance of Thomas Jefferson’s Birthday. Albemarle County Courts, the School Division’s Administrative offices, as well as County schools, will all be open on their normal schedule.
